Spay/Neuter Assistance

 We can help.

Each year, we provide thousands of dollars in assistance to individuals to have pets spayed/neutered.

Monroe County Humane Association (MCHA) is deeply committed to the spay/neuter initiative, recognizing its paramount importance in addressing pet overpopulation and safeguarding the health of our beloved companions. With our shelters consistently overfilled, promoting spay/neuter practices is not merely an option but a critical imperative. It is the most effective way for all of us to contribute to the well-being of pets and to alleviate the strain on our shelter system.

The MCHA Spay-Neuter Assistance Program offers vouchers designed for clients who can demonstrate their participation in a government financial assistance program. Click here to view the benefit and income qualifiers. These vouchers hold a value of $30 for cat spay/neuter surgeries and $50 for dog spay/neuter surgeries. Spay/neuter vouchers can be redeemed at our partner organization, PetsAlive

To request a voucher, please reach out to us at 812-333-6242 or email us at receptionist@monroehumane.org.

Please be aware that vouchers are limited to residents residing within Monroe County. If you reside outside of Monroe County, you may apply for a spay/neuter assistance voucher through Pet Friendly Services of Indiana by following this link. It’s important to note that any additional services or associated costs related to the procedure will be the responsibility of the pet owner and vouchers are not exchangeable for cash or other services. Each household is eligible for a maximum of three vouchers, and these vouchers will have an expiration date of three months from their issuance date. If you have a voucher and it has expired reach out to us and we can work with you to reissue it.

Can I use the voucher at a location other than PetsAlive?
Yes. If you wish to use your voucher at a different clinic, it is crucial to reach out to their office and confirm their willingness to accept the MCHA voucher. Participating clinics are required to submit a copy of the completed voucher form along with an invoice to MCHA. It’s important to note that the voucher’s value remains consistent, whether the surgery is performed at PetsAlive or another, with a value of $30 for cats and $50 for dogs.

Why is it important to spay or neuter my pet?
Spaying and neutering pets play a crucial role in both the well-being of the animals and the community at large. When pets are not neutered, behaviors such as urine-marking in dogs and spraying in cats are more common. These behaviors can be significantly reduced or even eliminated by timely spaying or neutering. Additionally, these procedures can help curb other unwanted behaviors such as aggression, roaming, and excessive barking. Beyond behavior, the financial benefits of spaying and neutering are also considerable. The cost of treating diseases related to the reproductive system, like reproductive system cancer or pyometra in pets, can be exorbitant compared to the more affordable spay or neuter surgeries.

Spaying and neutering pets are critical actions that address more than just the health and behavior of individual animals; they also tackle a pressing community issue: the overpopulation of pets. Unwanted litters often result in animals that end up in shelters, putting a strain on community resources and leading to higher numbers of pets without homes. By ensuring pets are spayed or neutered, pet owners can play a direct role in reducing this overpopulation. It’s a responsible step that not only enhances the quality of life for their pets but also contributes to the broader effort of reducing the influx of animals into shelters, helping to ensure that every pet has the chance to find a loving home.

We are proud members of the BISSELL Partners for Pets program.
