Spay/Neuter Initiative
Puppy

Spaying and neutering of companion animals is a major goal for the MCHA. Each year thousands of animals are brought into shelters because of irresponsible pet owners who do not have their pets spayed or neutered. In 2004, the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter took in 6,000 animals.

There will never be enough loving homes for all of these animals. Spaying and neutering is the only way to eliminate the pet overpopulation problem in our community.

The SNAP program is designed to help address this issue by providing financial assistance to individuals who may not otherwise be able to afford to sterilize their animal(s).

How SNAP works:

  • Call the MCHA SNAP line at (812) 333-6242
  • MCHA staff will ask you a few questions about your income, you and your animals.
  • If you qualify, you will be mailed a voucher good for a portion of the cost of a spay or neuter surgery and a vet list that includes surgery costs and vaccination requirements for all local vets
  • Schedule an appointment with any local vet for the surgery
  • Take the voucher with you to the appointment
  • You will pay the balance of the cost of the surgery
  • The vet will mail a portion of the voucher back to the MCHA and we will pay the vet the amount of the voucher

*Limit 5 vouchers per household per year.
