Success Stories

Millions of animals are taken to shelters every year. Although many of these animals meet a grim fate because of the lack of adoptive families and overpopulation, thousands of excited owners adopt pets each year. The joy an animal companion can bring into one's home is immeasurable. Their unique personalities, quirky habits and unconditional love have brought happiness to countless pet owners.

Every success story that results from an adoption breathes more life and compassion into the community - and gives a homeless animal a nurturing home. If you have a success story about an adoption or rescue, please add it here. Spread the message that loving, homeless animals are waiting to become "success stories" of their own.

Kindred Spirits is a new radio program being developed about the human-animal bond. Find out more about this show and learn how you can share your success story on the air.

Betsy
We adopted Betsy in early August 2008 when she was about a year old. Soon after she came home with us, we learned that she could jump our 4 ft chain link fence. We quickly built a 6 ft privacy fence and doubled the size of the backyard. She and our 5-year-old terrier mix chase each other around the yard and roughhouse while our 14-year-old Goldie mix (another City of Bloomington Animal Shelter adoptee) observes the fun from a safe distance. Betsy...

Ruby
Ruby, formerly Rhonda, has been the most wonderful addition to our home! She is a gentle soul who has really come out of her shell over these last two years. I feel truly blessed to have found her. She helps me start every morning with a smile when she wakes me with kisses and not just a wagging tail, but an entire wagging body. We are truly best friends and I look forward to many more wonderful years together!...

Bailey
My husband and I adopted Bailey (named Becca in the Bloomington Animal Shelter) in October 2007 when she was about 9 months old and found as a stray. We immediately fell in love with her when we met her at the temporary shelter set up on Kirkwood on Sundays. She fit right into our home so easily! The lovable demeanor that we first saw at the shelter has not gone away...over time, we've also enjoyed seeing her playful and energetic side come out. ...

Gizzly
I stopped into the shelter to play and socialize the dogs. My family recently lost our big family dog, a loving golden retriever over the summer. Anyone who has had to experience the death of a pet knows how heart breakingly empty a home can feel after. I could hear the loneliness in my mom's voice when I would talk to her about the house or our other dog, a small schkipperkee named Peanut. I saw Gizzly the day I was playing with the dogs. It was...

Bailey, formally known as Barry
We adopted Bailey (formally Barry and Harry) from the Bloomington Animal Shelter in October 2008. He had been returned twice before for various reasons. He fits right in with our lifestyle. He is active but also likes to cuddle on the couch. We can't imagine our life without him....
