Success Stories

Millions of animals are taken to shelters every year. Although many of these animals meet a grim fate because of the lack of adoptive families and overpopulation, thousands of excited owners adopt pets each year. The joy an animal companion can bring into one's home is immeasurable. Their unique personalities, quirky habits and unconditional love have brought happiness to countless pet owners.

Every success story that results from an adoption breathes more life and compassion into the community - and gives a homeless animal a nurturing home. If you have a success story about an adoption or rescue, please add it here. Spread the message that loving, homeless animals are waiting to become "success stories" of their own.

Kindred Spirits is a new radio program being developed about the human-animal bond. Find out more about this show and learn how you can share your success story on the air.

Saint
Saint was the 2nd dog in my life. My first was a mutt named Dutch who my parents rescued right before I was born and lived to be 16.

I got rescued Saint when she was 6 months old. She was a Beagle/Chow mix who would put her cheek up to the fence of her holding cell so I could pet it. I knew right away she was meant for me.

Unfortunately, I had to have Saint put down last Friday due to complications from old age. She turn...

Kona
We adopted Kona, formerly Polo, in March of 2008 when my wife and I we lived in Bloomington. Since then Kona has moved with us to Canada and from one coast to the other. In January of 2009 we left Bloomington and drove with Kona to our new home in Montreal, Quebec and then in September of 2010 we moved again. This time, we moved all the way across Canada to our new home in Campbell River on beautiful Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Throug...

Riley
Riley was my birthday present for my 7th birthday, and she has been a gift every single day since then. Of all the animals in the shelter the day my mom and Meme took me, she was the scruffiest, most pitiful, and cutest there, and just a tiny puppy. I loved her from the moment I saw her. I'm 17 and Riley is 10 now, and she has been my constant companion and best friend since the day I got her! She comes with my family almost everywhere we go and ...

Sally
Sally is the bomb! She's sweet-tempered, happy and such a wonderful addition to the family. Sally was 3 or 4 years old already when we sprung her from the Monroe County Humane Shelter. She had been there quite a while, wasn't the flashiest dog on the block and was patiently waiting for someone to see her true potential as a 'diamond in the ruff'. I cannot say enough about the benefits of getting an older dog. They are more mellow, don't chew ...
